Ultras Dynamo and Horde Zla: Smiles and faith also in these hard moments!

Dresden has always been a focal point in the whole German scenes, and Ultras Dynamo have roots since the late 70s/early 80s. This makes them one of the most ancient ultras group in Germany; nowadays they’re still one of the most active ones, which could easily be said just looking at some choreos or demonstrations during the last years, despite the fluctuating results from the club.

Traditionally, and for more than 20 years, the biggest groups in Dynamo world were all associated to right wing politics, but this trend has changed a bit in the last ten years. A new generation of ultras, which is now very influent on the stands and have a close connection to the club, brought the tifo far from the old politic views, and created a sort of apolitical support. This decision is now very widespread around many clubs in northern Europe, and it’s now a real thing also in the hottest stands of DDV Stadion, except some groups which still brings their ideologies on their flags and crests. A close relationship between Ultras Dynamo and Horde Zla, an historical base from FK Sarajevo could be the slogan of all this theme. Some years ago, with a strongly right wing views in Dresden world, a friendship like this wouldn’t have been possible.

Horde Zla was created in 1987, and always embraced liberal ideologies ever since, also because of the tradition of their club, which was founded by communist authorities as soon as the WW2 ended. In the last years in particular, the group welcomes to its stands various religions of supporters, Catholics, Protestants and Muslims; all mixed, in the capital one of the most divided country, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Various nationalist movements in the Balkans always tried to bring Horde Zla down, but unity of purposes and large numbers in the group allowed them to become on of the most influent realities in Bosnia, and in the whole eastern Europe. The cohesion between all the different people inside Horde Zla movement, and more recently also in K-Block, also brought to some of the most violent fights in the recents years. In 2009, for instance, a Bosnian supporter died and 40 were injured in Siroki Brijeg clashes, still nowadays considered as the most violent fight in the history of Bosnian football.

The Brotherhood

The friendship between these two massive fanbases started with the Germans travelling all across Europe to reach the Bosnians in some away matches. One occasion stands between the others, with FK Sarajevo away in Banja Luka. Seven German ultras traveled all the way just to support their friends from Horde Zla, and drove back home at night, with one van, with more than 30 hours behind the steering wheel. The Bosnian travel to Banja Luka, but it’s very difficult from Sarajevo. They were impressed with such a big dedication from the German towards their world. The brotherhood would be signed few months later in 2010. As some exponents of Horde Zla managed to enter Germany without a political visa, just for the special occasion. All the boys from Dresden loved their venture. They booked hotel rooms for everyone, with typical German organisation. The Bosnians were also invited to walk in front of their corteo the day after, towards a 2.Bundesliga match with Dynamo as host. Ever since, this brotherhood has been one of the most influent and solid in the whole European scene.

Friendship forever

The mixture between many different cultures will be a very good glue for the near future, and this very recent Covid-19 pandemic showed it once again. Few days ago in fact, Ultras Dresden provided food and essential products to more than 15 Bosnian families, as Germany managed to face better the virus, with a better economical and health organisation. A gesture that stands to renew a decennial friendship between Ultras Dynamo and Horde Zla.

Variety of cultures, religions, influences and knowledge’s from the ultras from Sarajevo will be added to a great organisation. This organisation is from the new generation of Ultras Dynamo. With these elements the bond between them can only be a success for the near and far future!

The Orthodox Brothers: Gate 7, Delije & Fratria!

We could write with certainty that in 2020 all fan bases or curve have or had a strong friendship bond with a group from a different club, during the years. Although independent, most of the ultras groups of the world find themselves in needs or desire to create a relationship with other cities, nations or continents. Examples are countless, and you could find plenty of them in the near future in this very own weekly serie which we kicked off last week with the Southern Italy Alliance!

Just at the second episode, we already find ourselves telling about a friendship that could be considered the strongest and most solid in the whole ultras world. We are talking about The Orthodox Brothers, formed by a triple friendship between three red&white club’s ultras: Delije, Serbs from Crvena Zvezda, Gate 7, Greeks from Olympiakos, and Fratria, Russians from Spartak Moscow.

There are various reasons of community between the supporters, but the same colors are certainly not a priority in this potpourri of history and tradition. Belgrade, Athens and Moscow: three capital cities, three historical rampart of countries that at some point covered a leading spot in the world society checkboard. Their famous motto “three flowers, two colors, one faith” helps us pointing out the religious bond between the three countries. Serbia, Greece and Russia all have indeed an Orthodox prevalence in their population. Political orientation also have a weight inside this pact: with more or less extremism, the three fanbases identify themselves with ideologies more to the left side than the right, mainly married in order to go against their big rivals in their respective cities. Both Partizan Belgrade and CSKA Moscow are founded back in the days by the army, Yugoslavian and Soviet. Olympiakos instead, fights the extreme right-wing ideologies of their fierce citizen rivals of Panathinaikos. The friendship between CSKA Moscow, Partizan and PAOK is not casual, and it’s there to contrast The Orthodox Brothers, another story that we will analyze in this serie.

We find the first hints to a friendship in 1986, in a fervent period for a chameleonic Europe, and close to historical facts such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Soviet Union and the Balkan war. The occasion was an European match between Crvena Zvezda and Panathinaikos, where Olympiakos wished to joining in in order to help intimidate and fighting their biggest rivals. Thirteen years later, in 1999, we could find the first contact between Spartak Moscow and Crvena Zvezda.

Serbs are actually the glue in this three side friendship, considering there is nothing just apart from respect between Russians and Greeks. To scale back the relationship between Athens and Moscow there is also the much bigger friendship that Belgrade has with the muscovite Kremlin, as a result of two very similar kind of nationalism applied in the respective society during recent history. Already in the early 19th Century, Russian army often helped orthodox population in some balkans conflict, and all this people will mainly be gathered in Serbia in the next years. Very intense relationships are still going on between Serbia and Russia also nowadays.

Recent contacts between the ultras bases, always in the high tiers of European football, had further consolidated a bond with more than 30 years of history, and The Orthodox Brothrs could be considered as the strongest alliance in the supporters world for the upcoming years.

Below you will find some historical moments which have shaped nowadays brotherhood!

Last year Crvena Zvesda & Olympiacos met in the EL, therefore Delije prepared this choreography to celebrate the brotherhood, with the text; “Let today win the one in better mood, We’ll be brothers forever in evil and good”.

Before the match both groups met each other in streets of Belgrade for a united corteo.

In the return match in Athens, Gate 7 also prepared a tifo to emphasize their brotherhood.

Back in 2015 Spartak fans unveiled an impressive choreography celebrating their friendship with Delije!

On the 7th of November 2014 when Crvena Zvesda hosted a Euroleague match against their Greek brother Olympiacos with the Serbian fans singing in Greek the trademark Olympiacos fans’ chant “something magical”!

The Southern Italy alliance: Bari, Salernitana and Reggina

Today we’re going to talk about a strong brotherhood that links three of the most important ultras movements in Southern Italy: Bari (Apulia), Salernitana (Campania) and Reggina (Calabria).

In the beginning there was a strong friendship between UCN Bari and GSF Salerno, born following some letters exchange. The really first match of this bond was Bari-Salernitana, played on September 25 1983 in the old Della Vittoria Stadium. In the Curva Nord ultras from both sides stood together sealing officially this connection. Since then, groups from both sides often attend friends’ matches when possible and every fixture between these two old teams is always a great moment of celebration and friendship, honoring this long lasting twinning.

Before 1986 there were usually hard fights when Salernitana and Reggina faced each other, but since 1986-87 season a strong relationship was finally born and Ultras supporting these teams started getting along, with a choreo the following year in old Vestuti stadium in Salerno celebrating this new fellowship.

Due to this mutual friendship, also Bari UCN created an important bond with Boys Reggio in 1988: an historical triad was born, with three of the most relevant curves in Italy. Every match that sees two of these teams facing each other is always prepared to be a day to remember, with huge choreos and pyroshows, banners celebrating history of this bond and the ones that created it, pre- and post-match moments for being together as brothers.

Wheter you are in Arechi, San Nicola or Granillo stadium, it’s not unusual to see flags or scarves from the other two teams even if they are not playing, you can hear chants praising this brotherhood, you will always be welcomed by your ultras mates. In August 2019 they faced in a friendly tournament to honor 100 years from Salernitana foundation, when Bari won the trophy.

These teams in recent past haven’t faced great fortunes, they all faced bankruptcy and had to restart from the fourth tier of Italian football. Nevertheless, ultras groups were always by their side and their friends always helped to come back stronger and stood close in their moments of need, even when it wasn’t about football but more important problems: lots of charity initiatives were supported by these three curves. Three seaside cities, three football teams, one strong bond!
